On Monday ‘Nick the weather guy’ threw up the forecast for this week and said ‘Yep, the rain is coming, start preparing’. Alright Nick, one last hike it is.
Dog Mountain fit the bill since it has around the same specs as Indian Point (given I don’t pass it of course) and was close enough that I could drop H off at work in the morning and be back in time to pick her up. It turned out to be my favorite hike so far. All of the hikes up until this consisted of a long grind uphill through the woods with a fantastic sight at the end. Dog mountain, on the other hand, gave me a good mile of scenic hiking. So much so that I wasn’t blown away by the top (probably because I had that view all along the way). Anyway, it turned out great. Perfect choice to end the sunny weather with.
This is pretty much what the first 2 miles looked like. Straight up and sunny. The first mile climbed around 1500 feet which is just ridiculous.
First lookout point. Someone even put a nice sitting log out near the edge.
Closer to the top where it started to level out and have amazing views.
Just over that ridge was ‘Puppy Dog Mountain’ which was about 800 feet below the real summit but gave the best view of both sides of the gorge. This is the east side since I already gave the west side some love.
This was by far the coolest part to me. When you think of ‘the path to the summit’, you must be thinking of this. It was absolutely incredible. Unobstructed views the whole way up.
And the view from the summit.
Another great hike, and I even made it back in time to pick H up from work.
